
Training Program: About the Counseling Center
The Counseling Center is part of the Division of Student Affairs and works closely with the other 6 departments (Career Resource Center, Student Financial Affairs, Dean of Students Office, Housing, J. Wayne Reitz Student Union and Recreational Sports).
The Counseling Center is staffed by 12 faculty, 5 visiting faculty, 3 post-docs in psychology, 6 interns, a full-time counseling associates and a support staff of 7. The center provides services to UF students, while also providing consultation services to faculty and staff administration and parents. The center provides individual , couples, and group counseling, outreach programs and workshops, consultation services, and teaching to the UF community. Senior staff at the Center are affiliate faculty members in the APA-accredited doctoral program in Counseling Psychology and/or department of Counselor Education. As such, they teach courses, sit on doctoral committees, and do research.
The Counseling Center is committed to providing high quality psychological, developmental, and preventative services to the UF community. The Center has a well-developed group counseling program. Examples of the types of groups offered are: general therapy, math confidence, stress management, LGBT support, and Invincible Black Woman. Center staff also provide consultation services to a variety of campus departments and groups, including law enforcement, family housing, professional schools, and athletic programs. The Center also has special programs in several areas, all of which are open to intern involvement. ASPIRE is an enrichment program targeting the needs of African American students in support of achieving academic success. Opportunities to work with mind-body therapy are offered via individual and group training in hypnosis, imagery, and innovative stress management techniques.
The Center provides services encompassing a wide range of psychological concerns, ranging from developmental issues to severe pathology. Staff members are part of a Crisis Response Team which sends team members out to help members of the university community cope with tragedies or loss of life.
The Counseling Center faculty are actively involved in numerous local, state, and national professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association (APA), American College Personnel Association (ACPA), American Counseling Association (ACA), American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT), International Association of Counseling Services (IACS), American Association of State Psychology Boards (AASPB), Florida Society of Clinical Hypnosis (FSCH), Association of Counseling Center Training Agents (ACCTA), Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA), Florida Psychological Association (FPA), and Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD).
In January of 1991, the Counseling Center moved into an expanded, newly renovated facility. The facility increased the size of the Center and includes expanded group treatment rooms, observation rooms, and state-of-the-art digitalized video tape capabilities. Each intern is provided a furnished office with large window, new carpet, computer, and video recording equipment.
